2015-2016
Grants Pass, Oregon
How do we teach all different ages at ALC?
We believe that every child regardless of age should be allowed to learn at his/her academic level; therefore, students are separated into very small groupings and taught at their level for each specific academic area.  Groupings are usually around a 6:1 ratio.  For the 2015-2016 school year, academic groups for 3rd-5th graders, 1st and 2nd graders, and kindergarteners will each have their own classroom for lessons.

What kind of curriculum do we use?
All curriculum is tailored to each individual.  We utilize such programs as Houghton Mifflin Reading, Reading A-Z, Saxon Math, Critical Thinking Math, Story of the World; we are also at liberty to add in programs fitting to each child's method of learning at any point during the year.

History/Social Studies, Science: Lessons will follow the Oregon state standards for grade level and tie into our language arts lessons where applicable

*spelling, fluency, reading comprehension, handwriting, and grammar/syntax are all areas we believe require specific and consistent teaching throughout the year, and as such are incorporated on a daily basis.

How many students?
We will only accept a total of 40 students for the 2015-2016 school year, with a 2 teacher to 20 student ratio. Parent participation will also be strongly encouraged.

What schedule do we follow?
We try to keep our academic school year calendar close to Grants Pass District 7's and Three River's calendar. For the 2015-2016 school year*, we will most likely start September 8th and end June 10th (see calendar insert).

School days are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
-¾ Day Kindergarten: 8:30-1:00
-K-2nd Grade: 8:30-2:30pm
-3rd through 5th Grade: 8:30-3:30pm

Students are allowed to be dropped off no more than 15 minutes early and need to be picked up on time. Aftercare is provided from 2:30-3:30pm only when paid monthly.  Options for after school activities and lessons are also available. Talk to the principal about these possibilities.
*2015-2016 Calendar coming soon

What enrichment classes do we offer?
Enrichment classes always take place around 1:30-2:30pm; therefore, ¾ day kindergarteners will not participate.
We hope to offer (but are not limited to) lessons in:
-Foreign language, music, art, architecture and construction, geology, physics, 4H activities including caring/raising animals, structured field trips with other homeschool groups, gardening, archery, technology, and cooking.

What kind of testing do we use?
According to Oregon State Educational Mandates, all students must take state tests in 3rd, 5th, 8th, and 10th.
In-class assessments include (but are not limited to) fluency assessments, comprehension quizzes, math tests, spelling tests, and bi-monthly checks for proper level placement for language arts and math.
*We do not believe in testing for testing's sake, but we believe strongly in utilizing testing to ensure that our students are meeting and exceeding grade level expectations.

Is parental involvement mandatory?
Yes. We expect parents to take an active role in their child's education. Parents can aid the classroom environment by teaching lessons (in an area of expertise), assist the head teacher, purchase supplies for the classroom, volunteer to beautify our campus, or make donations to specific school purchases (see the principal for details).

Do students have to wear uniforms?
No, we do not require students to wear uniforms; however, please dress appropriately for school and seasons. Please no short skirts or shorts, spaghetti straps, heavy makeup, stomach showing, inappropriate messages/images on clothing, etc. Shoes should be easy for kids to run in and closed-toed if possible. Also, bullying and foul language are not allowed.

Are snacks and lunch provided?
No. Please have your child bring a healthy snack and lunch daily. Refrigerated and microwaved items are fine for lunch.  We DO NOT share food.
*Please inform us of any food allergies or preferences!
